Urbex Atlas Charter

The Explorer's
Code of Ethics

Urbex, or urban exploration, is a human and cultural adventure. It is based on curiosity, memory and a desire to discover what time has left behind. But this exploration only makes sense if it is accompanied by respect, discretion and a commitment to preservation.

This charter sets out the fundamental principles that every explorer undertakes to follow.

I. Verify before entering

Ensure that the site is genuinely abandoned. If it is not, remain outside the property and simply observe or photograph the exterior. Asking the owner's permission is the best course of action.

II. Do not alter anything

These places do not belong to us. We observe them, we document them, but we do not alter them. Do not break anything, do not move anything, do not steal anything. Do not force entry: if a door is locked, it stays locked. Leave the premises exactly as we found them.

III. Respect memory and heritage

Urbex is not a treasure hunt; it is a quest for memory. Do not take any objects, however insignificant. Do not tag, carve or leave any personal markings. Respect the artworks, archives, objects and human traces you encounter.

IV. Prioritise safety

No exploration is worth risking your life for. Always assess the risks before entering. Never explore alone in dangerous places. Wear suitable equipment (torch, mask, shoes, gloves). Be mindful of hazardous areas: roofs, fragile floors, unstable structures.

V. Know and respect the law

Exploring does not mean trespassing. Never enter a site marked as dangerous or under surveillance. Obey the instructions of owners, caretakers or law enforcement officers. Be aware of the legal limits of exploration and respect them.

VI. Document and preserve history

Every place has a history. Our role is to bring it back to life, not to erase it. Document, photograph and bear witness with accuracy and sensitivity. Record the history, function and anecdotes associated with the place. Help preserve the memory of forgotten places.

VII. Respect the environment

Some abandoned places are still home to life , human, animal or plant. Do not disturb the temporary inhabitants. Do not litter; leave nothing behind. Minimise your environmental footprint on every visit.

VIII. Be a responsible community member

The urbex community is built on trust and kindness. Encourage good practices and raise awareness among newcomers. Do not condone vandalism or dangerous behaviour. Share your experiences to inspire, not to encourage disrespect.

Urbex is a shared heritage. Its beauty lies in respecting what remains. Be a role model for new explorers. Foster a culture of humility, respect and curiosity. Leave every place untouched so that others may discover it in turn.

"I am a guest, never an owner.
I discover, I respect, I preserve.
I leave only my footsteps , and take away only my memories."
